NEACAC honors Hutchinson as Professional of the Year

St. Albans director of guidance is dedicated to postsecondary education opportunities

WINOOSKI (July 16, 2014) 鈥 The New England Association of College Admission Counselors has honored Katharine 鈥淜aki鈥 Hutchinson with its prestigious Professional of the Year award.

Hutchinson, who retired earlier this month as director of guidance at Bellows Free Academy, was recognized by her colleagues as an 鈥渙utstanding professional in the college admissions process in Vermont鈥 at the annual meeting at St. Anselm鈥檚 College in Manchester, N.H.

The New England Association for College Admission Counseling Professional of the Year award is reserved for those individuals who are strong and ethical advocates for students and have a proven record of accomplishment throughout their careers. They demonstrate honesty, patience, thoroughness and sensitivity in their work with students, parents and colleagues. They are mentors, leaders and consummate professionals.

A resident of St. Albans, Hutchinson is also a member of the board of directors of Vermont Student Assistance Corp., where she has been instrumental in guiding the development of expanded career and education counseling programs for Vermont middle school and high school students.

In 1989, Hutchinson received the James F. Cawley award as outstanding school counselor of the year from the Vermont School Counselors Association. The award is presented in recognition of distinguished contributions to school counseling and to acknowledge and honor those instrumental in bringing outstanding innovations to the development of counseling to Vermont youth.

She is a member of the American School Counseling Association and the Vermont Counseling Association and has been active in various counseling and substance abuse prevention organizations. She holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Vermont and a master鈥檚 degree in counselor education from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
