Vermont Honor Scholarship to be renamed for Governor Phil Hoff

Governor’s historic vision opened doors to educational opportunity for Vermonters

WINOOSKI (February 27, 2015) – Vermont Student Assistance Corp., celebrating 50 years of helping Vermonters achieve their education goals is renaming the Vermont Honor Scholarship for Governor Phil Hoff.

The й board of directors voted unanimously to honor Governor Hoff with the scholarship. Legislation to be introduced this year will make the renamed scholarship – The Governor Phil Hoff Vermont Honor Scholarship – a permanent part of Vermont statute and history.

“It was Governor Hoff’s leadership that has made higher education a life-changing opportunity for Vermonters,” said Scott Giles, president and CEO of й. “It is fitting that the Vermont Honor Scholarship, which Governor Hoff established in 1965, honor the man whose historic vision has made it possible to change so many young lives.”

By establishing й, Hoff also has made it possible to provide more than $500 million in grants and $84 million in scholarships, Giles said.

The Vermont Honor Scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding seniors nominated by Vermont’s public high schools and technical centers. Nominees exemplified both scholastic excellence and participation in extracurricular and community service activities. About 100 Vermont Honor Scholarships are awarded annually, each worth $1,000.

Governor Hoff shared his vision for creating й as a public nonprofit agency to promote educational opportunity in taped remarks at a Statehouse event Thursday; it can be viewed .
